Kevin Amboe has taught elementary and secondary positions and now is an elementary information and media literacy (IML) coordinator. I'm so glad to be doing what I'm doing and my major goal is to continue helping my teachers create information rich lessons for their curriculum that also allow students opportunities to think critically about information sources. Along the way, I keep on hoping that I'll make it easier to teachers to learn new technology without feeling overwhelmed by their workload.
Most of my teaching has to pack a punch within TEN MINUTES so that's what most of my lessons look like. HIGH IMPACT in the first TEN MINUTES. Independent learning follows. My students have come up to the library to do research and my goal is to influence them with a brief lesson that creates some change in their brain. I also do great trade in parent-led literature discussion groups since I am in a location that has amazing parent support.
I write the "Electronic Eye" Column for VOYA -- Voice of Youth Advocates and write book reviews for School Library Journal. I have presented at several conferences and conventions including WLMA (Washington Library Media Association).
I also serve on the Only What We Can Carry Project Board of Advisors.

Mrs. Morris has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area her whole life. She attended Sacred Heart from kindergarten to eighth grade. She received her B.A. in 2005, and continued on to receive her Teaching Credential and Masters Degree in 2007 from Santa Clara University.
She has been teaching 3rd grade at Sacred Heart for four years now and developed this lesson plan for Riding Freedom. This story concludes in an area near her school so it is of great interest to her students.

Mrs. Witte is the Resource Specialist at Sacred Heart School, in Saratoga, California. She works with students by supporting their learning strengths, in order to support their weaker areas. She has a Masters in Special Education from Santa Clara University and has been teaching at Sacred Heart for 7 years. Her experiences traveling as the daughter of a Navy officer, gave her a love of geography that she enthusiastically shares. In her opinion, any opportunity to combine technology with visual information helps her students to learn. When she was introduced to Google Lit Trips at a local CUE conference, she knew she wanted to apply this to a novel read by students at her school.
Mrs. Witte developed this Lit Trip so that more students could better visualize locations on the east coast and the adventures of traveling on a stagecoach during the 1800’s. The main character, Charlie Parkhurst, actually lived in an area close to her school. Many of the stagecoach routes are familiar locations to her students so it was fun for everyone to step back in time and connect the story to local spots.

She has been the librarian/library media specialist at Wilderness Elementary School in Spotsylvania, Virginia, since the school opened in 1998. The school has 750 students in grades K-5 and Mrs. White sees all of them in 30 classes every week. She also serves as the curator of the school web page. She has also served as a Young Adult Librarian for the Dallas Public Library.

Flotsam by David Wiesner

“Flotsam” is defined as debris floating on the ocean and is usually from shipwrecks. In the Caldecott winning book Flotsam, by David Weisner, the flotsam that washes ashore is a very special underwater camera. Come along for a trip around the world that follows the fantastical trip of a camera, the marine animals it captures on film and the children that find it.
This project was the combined effort of eight first grade classes and over 200 students. Each class viewed the book Flotsam and each class was assigned a photograph from the book to investigate. Classes were divided into small groups and using Atlases and the Internet, each group decided where in the world the picture occurred.
Using a large map and Wikki Stix, small groups picked locations, marked them with stickers and explained their decision making process to the whole class. Each class then voted and decided where their placemark would go on Google Earth. When all of the placemarks were decided, Mrs. Doe connected the locations with a path around the world. Students explored the Google Trip using Google Earth in the computer lab.

As the enrichment and technology teacher at Pelham Elementary, Holly works with over 950 students in first through fifth grade with a focus on math, science, and technology. Students visit enrichment once a week and Holly searches for ways to integrate their classroom curriculum with technology. While teaching first graders about the ocean, she decided to share one of her favorite wordless picture books, Flotsam. Although the pictures are fantastical, there were so many factual details and marine animals to explore.
She is a graduate of the University of Maine at Farmington where she received her degree in Elementary Education. She received her M.Ed. in Technology in Education from Lesley University. Holly's first love is children's literature. She enjoys finding ways to enhance literature with technology and Google Lit trips seemed like the perfect fit. She is the author of Technology through Children's Literature published by Teachers Ideas Press in 2003.
In addition to teaching at Pelham Elementary, Holly is an Adjunct Faculty for Lesley University, teaching teachers how to integrate the Internet into their classrooms.

The students involved in the Korero Pt England (KPE) book reviews are Year 5 and 6 students. The project just fell together. A couple of years ago I asked my sister, an overseas pilot for the U.S. Air, to purchase children’s books from other countries. I had these books waiting for a prime opportunity. This past fall my dad, a flight instructor, had a student come from France to learn how to fly. The student, Katherena, has lived in several countries, and she speaks five languages. I asked her if she would come to my class and read some of these books. I gave her a couple of books, one in French and the other in Spanish for her to preview. In between this time, I was speaking with mrs. Barfield, Instructional Technology Specialist, and she was telling me about the Google Earth Lit Trips. We combined all of the components and ended up with a wonderful lesson in which students had the chance to explore land forms and places around the world.  - Michelle Wilkes, 1st Grade Teacher

I have attached the lit trip from Mrs. Wilkes' First Grade Class in Moultrie Georgia. I am the Instructional Technology Specialist for that school and was included in the design and delivery of the lesson. The description boxes are varied because responses came from different students and they are authentic first grade responses. The places around the world came from them too--from connections to texts, personal experiences, etc. They have limited prior knowledge. Still, it was very successful and I can't wait to do more.

This Lit Trip is a remarkable collection of teacher resources. Each location place marker contains a brief plot summary, information on the location, geographic features, themes, and links to kid friendly resource websites.
