The Anne Frank Secret Annex

Often referred to as the Anne Frank House, the street-side portion of the building was the offices of Opekta and Pectacon, the spice and gelling companies where Anne’s father Otto Frank worked.
The hiding place was actually an annex that had been added to the rear of the building. The Annex, connected to the main building only by a narrow hallway, was not visible from the street and was inside a closed courtyard.
This Literary Location Google Lit Trip, includes the only known film footage of Anne Frank. She is only in the video for four seconds (beginning at about the 10 second mark, as she looks out of an upper story window in the front of the Opekta and Pectacon offices.
There is also a link to a room-by-room virtual tour of the secret annex.

Steinbeck Young Authors is an innovative program that was created to provide an opportunity for middle school students to explore the excitement of writing, enhance their writing skills, and introduce them to the works of John Steinbeck.
Steinbeck himself was inspired by a good book and strong teachers—a combination we hope will motivate students to discover the power of the written word. Teachers in the Steinbeck Young Authors program use a specially developed curriculum written especially for The Red Pony.

This remarkable special Google Lit Trip project brings 3-D drawings of great Author Homes to Google Earth.

About the Contributor...
Beryl Reid loved to draw as a child and graduated from Massachusetts College of Art with a degree in Photography and Painting in 1974. She earned a Master's Degree in Educational Technology in 1990. Beryl became a teacher of Humanities, Social Studies, 5th Grade and Computers during her 35 years of teaching in the Billerica Public Schools in Massachusetts.
She believes that teaching is mostly about learning, so she recently began to learn to use a 3D modeling tool called SketchUp in order to create models of interesting buildings so they could be placed in Google Earth's 3D building layer. Beryl realized that writers often lived in places as interesting as they were, so she created "Literary Landmarks". The collection was sparked by an early in her life visit to the incredible home of one of her favorite writers, Mark Twain. Each building is a story and it is hoped the model will help readers imagine the time and place of a great author.
